“Bah humbug!” That was the catchphrase from the main character Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol.” The grumpy Scrooge felt he had nothing to be happy about. His dismal life story comprised of a father who abandoned him, a mother who died during his birth, a sister who dies unexpectedly, a nephew he has a little relationship with and a fiancé who leaves him. This cheerless series of events has the makings to have anyone grouchy. Therefore Scrooge’s unsavory demeanor stuck with him even during Christmas.
Has our life misfortunes got us grouchy at Christmas? Though the story of Scrooge is fictional, we can learn from it. Regardless to what has happened, we still have plenty to give God praise for. Commonly during the holidays we have a tendency to look at what we don’t have instead of what we have left. It’s the remaining balances of life that should allow us to rejoice. Scrooge had a job, home, a nephew and enough wealth to be able to share. If we stop to think about it, we too have more than we think we do which is enough to praise God for. Get out of that stupor this holiday season and celebrate life. Not just our life but the life of Christ. “The LORD has done great things for us, and we are glad.” Psalm 126:3 (NKJV)
“This was the LORD’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:23-24 (NKJV)
